  1. All things being equal, marry someone in finance (or learn about the miracle of compound interest).

  4. For anastomoses, learn and perfect the technique that you can perform with the lowest leak rate, no matter how long it takes. (This will save you endless time in the future.)
  5. There is no faking it inside the OR. (Practice outside the OR and have a detailed plan going into the OR?)
  6. Your attending is balancing the welfare of the patient with your education and the need to finish the OR case in a timely fashion. (If you can do the case technically well and in a timely manner, you can do the whole case.)
  7. When contemplating additional training, you can be an average surgeon for 35 years or a superior surgeon for 1 or 2 less years.
  8. Your medical malpractice coverage has a maximum.
